How every lesson runs

Every lesson runs the same way: Aims, Hook, Numeracy, Learn, two group tasks, Your mahi, Check. Lessons 1 to 5 build the ideas, 6 to 10 explore them and 11 to 15 apply them, ending in a class action lesson. Each carries a te ao Māori anchor, a hauora focus and a five-question numeracy starter on New Zealand data.

AimsMātauranga, what students will know. Mahi, what they will do.
HookA big question worth arguing about.
NumeracyFive questions on real New Zealand data.
LearnFour key messages, each with an example.
Group tasksTwo tasks, with the cards and sheets to run them.
Your mahiThe follow-up sheet, then the lesson's activities in the online lesson app.
CheckWord, question, step. One minute before the bell.

Sixty minutes and one rhythm across all 120 lessons. Follow it as it is, or keep the shape and swap in your own content.

What every unit includes

In the download

  • 15 PowerPoint decks, plus all 15 combined and as a PDF
  • Teacher notes for every lesson, with answer keys
  • A one-page follow-up sheet for every group task
  • Printables in colour and in black and white
  • A "Where am I at?" progress page for students
  • A curriculum map against the final Phase 4 curriculum
  • The online lesson app, so no workbook to print
  • A READ ME FIRST and your school licence

The decks are PowerPoint, so change anything: cut a task, add your own scenario, swap in local data.

The online lesson app

Students open a link on any device, with no login and nothing to install, and work through each lesson's activities: numeracy, votes, sorts, word games and a five-question check to finish. The app replaces the printed workbook.
